Let this marinate for a moment: Todd Congelliere and Sean Cole have been making music together since 1995, first with F.Y.P. and, for the last 17 years, in Toys That Kill.

That’s three different decades in which the world has been graced with the complementary nature of their musical relationship, Congelliere’s occasionally erratic, at times eccentric, but always captivating vocal delivery is truly the perfect counter to Cole’s comparatively velvety smooth voice. It’s one of the best 1-2 punches in modern punk rock. What’s weird is that Congelliere’s prolificness as a songwriter and label owner—between TTK, The Underground Railroad To Candyland, his work under his own name, and his ownership of Recess Records—has always made the long gaps between TTK albums seem shorter.

Oh, and if any of that makes Toys That Kill sound old, I mean, they’re older—I would prefer to refer to them as seasoned. They’re still a powerhouse, especially onstage, where they perform with a vigor most bands half their age couldn’t possibly muster. Even at this stage of their musical careers, they’re at the height of their powers. 2012’s Fambly 42 was a revelation, a jangly, jambly, yet raucous collection of garage-tinged punk that delicately, if loudly, balanced raw energy, strong melodies and just a pinch of fun unpredictability. Its follow-up, Sentimental Ward, continues in a similar vein, albeit with a little more punch: The guitars are a little louder, the rhythm section a bit thicker, but that nervous energy remains baked into every second. Check out “Ready To Fall” from the album below.
